Festive fashion for dogs: cosy knits, party collars & how to style your pup safely
Share
It’s that time of year again – the tree is up, the fairy lights are glowing, and our dogs are just as ready as we are to join the festive fun. Dressing your pup should be all about comfort, plenty of canine style, and just a touch of cheeky charm! At Love My Human, we believe festive dog fashion should be practical, chic and completely comfortable for them. And with the right pieces, your pet can look the part whether they’re out on a crisp Boxing Day walk or cuddling up for a cosy family photo.
Cosy knits: where comfort meets chic
There’s something about a soft winter jumper on a cold day – for humans as well as dogs! If your pup is prone to feeling the chills, a cosy knit is not only warm, it’s easy to wear and surprisingly practical. A well-fitted knit will help your dog stay snug without weighing them down, thanks to soft fabrics that move naturally with their body. And because festive style should be playful, there’s no shortage of choice - from understated neutrals to cheerful seasonal patterns.
A knit or two are also handy to have around if your dog is due for their next appointment at the Love My Human grooming salon. Many dogs still need a trim at this time of year but losing that layer of floof can also coincide with a cold blast of winter weather. A nice, lightweight sweater helps keep any chills at bay.
At Love My Human, it shouldn’t surprise you to know that we have a fabulous selection of knits in our clothing department. We’re London’s most fashionable pet boutique, after all! Every piece of knitwear that’s been lovingly curated into our collection is made from durable, quality materials – they are pieces that feel as good as they look.

Accessories: bows, hats…and a hint of sparkle?
Of course, not every dog loves wearing clothes. So, for pups who prefer to run garment-free, a smart accessory can offer just the right amount of festive flair. A bow from our Christmas Collection will instantly dress up an everyday collar and if your pup is up for it, our exclusive Christmas Tree Hat is a must for the family photo!
Failing that, why not treat them to a new Christmas Day collar? We have some gorgeous collars to choose from. Most also come with the option of a matching lead and many are exclusive designs you won’t find anywhere else.
Styling your pup safely
Our top tip for dressing your dog? Never choose anything too tight that could restrict their natural range of movement. That’s the most important thing. Avoid anything with tiny pieces that could be chewed too - and keep an eye on the temperature if they’re going to be all dressed up indoors.
Some dogs really do benefit from an extra layer, especially small breeds with fine coats like Chihuahuas or Italian Greyhounds, as well as older dogs or those with health issues that make it harder for them to stay warm. It’s just as important to know which dogs don’t need any help. Breeds with thick or double coats such as Huskies, Malamutes, Collies and German Shepherds are already built for colder weather and can overheat very quickly if they are put in jumpers or coats. This can happen even faster in a warm indoor setting, for example when the whole family is gathered in a busy living room with the fire going. In those moments it’s much safer to skip the outfit altogether and let your fluffy dog stay cool and comfortable.
Our houses can heat up over the Christmas period - particularly with all those extra humans around and ovens blazing! So just make sure your pet keeps their cool. No canine fashion statement is worth overheating for! Get ready to de-robe them immediately if they are panting or seem subdued and make sure that water bowls are topped up with cool, clean water at all times.
We’d also always recommend you supervise your dog carefully whenever they’re wearing any clothing. Fabrics can catch and claws can get stuck – you don’t want any accidents. Festive fashion should be fun, never stressful.
