Summer dog grooming tips to keep your pup cool and comfortable

When summer rolls in and temperatures begin to rise across the UK, it's essential to adjust your dog's grooming routine to keep them cool, comfortable, and healthy. Dogs can overheat easily <keep your dog cool blog> in warmer months, especially those with thick coats or flat faces like Pugs or Frenchies. Matted fur can trap heat, dirt, and moisture, leading to discomfort, hot spots, or even skin infections. Grooming isn’t just about looks - it’s about your dog’s well-being too!

While at-home maintenance is key, a professional groom offers a deep clean and coat management that can’t be achieved at home. Our team of experienced, pup-loving pros know how to thoroughly de-shed, detangle, and clean your dog’s coat to prevent skin issues and will also be able to often spot early signs of skin infections, parasites, or lumps that you might miss.

We have all the proper tools and techniques too. Professional grooming tools can handle thick undercoats, tight mats, and tough nails more effectively and comfortably than home equipment. Plus, some breeds benefit from specific cuts (like Poodles or Schnauzers), which are best left to a trained groomer.

Perhaps most importantly, regular professional grooming sessions help your dog associate the experience with comfort and care, rather than fear or stress. At Love My Human, we’ve created an environment where dogs (and owners!) feel safe and cared for, so even if your pup is nervous first time, we make it our mission to make them comfortable as quickly as possible - and it seems to work!

Regular, professional grooms are definitely the best way to maintain your dog’s coat and skin health long term, but what you do between visits can make a difference too. Whether you're strolling through the city or heading off on a weekend adventure, here are some Love My Human summer tips to help your dog stay fresh in between grooms:

Brush regularly (even daily!)

Frequent brushing at home helps remove loose fur, reduces shedding, and prevents mats - especially in double-coated breeds like Golden Retrievers or Huskies. It also keeps your dog’s coat airy and breathable, which helps with temperature regulation. A gentle detangling spray can help make the job a bit easier, and infuses your dog’s cost with fragrant, fur-friendly ingredients.

Check for ticks and grass seeds

After walks in the countryside or long grass, it’s important to check your dog’s paws, ears, and underarms for ticks and grass seeds. These can cause serious irritation or infection if left unnoticed.

Bath only when needed

While it might be tempting to bathe your dog often during summer, too much bathing can strip natural oils from their skin. Use a gentle, dog-specific shampoo and only bathe when they’re noticeably dirty or smelly. If it’s just the smelliness you’re concerned about, a quick spritz of dog fragrance can help until it’s time to visit us!

Trim the trouble areas!

Even if you're not after a full cut, visiting us for a gentle trim around the eyes, paws, and sanitary areas can keep your dog clean and more comfortable.

Keep nails in check

With more outdoor activity, nails may naturally wear down - but don't count on it! Long nails can cause discomfort or even injury. If you’re unsure about your dog’s nails, just pop by and ask one of our experienced team to check them for you.
