Summer holidays without your dog: How to keep them happy while you’re away

The beach is calling, your suitcase is packed... but those puppy-dog eyes? Brutal. Leaving your dog behind for a ‘human’ holiday is never easy - but with a bit of planning (and a few comforts from Love My Human), you can make it a stress-free experience for both of you.

Here’s a go-to guide from us on ways to keep tails wagging while you’re away:

1. Choose the right care option

Who's on dog duty? It’s all about what suits your pup’s personality best:

  • Home-based sitter: Ideal for dogs who thrive on routine and dislike change. Being in a home environment with their usual walks, mealtimes, and snuggle spots can ease anxiety. Make sure your sitter has all your dog’s favourites, from their LMH beds to well-loved toys and treats. Familiar smells = instant comfort.

  • Dog hotels: For sociable pups who enjoy a touch of luxury, a dog hotel can be a true home away from home. The best ones offer cosy, home-style spaces where dogs can roam freely, curl up in their own bed, or even snuggle up with the carer at night. Two to have on your radar are The Country Dog Hotel, with its “sleep-in-bed with the carer” option, and Bath Country Pets, where dogs stay in beautifully appointed stable-style rooms.

  • Friends or family: Familiar faces can be very comforting - just make sure they’re confident dog handlers and understand your pup’s needs. Leave them fully prepped with essentials and a written routine. And remember, our Dog Daycare is always an option for daytime support too!

2. Keep the routine going

Dogs love predictability. Help them settle by sticking to the usual:

  • Maintain regular feeding and walking times. Ask carers to mimic your home schedule as closely as possible, as this structure creates comfort and lowers stress levels.

  • Pack their Love My Human leash or harness for walks. The feel and scent of their usual kit can instantly reassure your dog in unfamiliar settings.

3. Pack their must-haves

A well-packed dog bag = a confident, contented pup. Think beyond the basics and include comfort, care, and enrichment items.

  • Food and bowls: Stick to their usual diet to avoid digestive upsets.

  • Medication: If applicable, provide clear written instructions and set reminders for the sitter or carer.

  • Comforts: Their beds and blankets, to help them relax in new surroundings.

  • Boredom-busters: Dogs need mental stimulation too! Bring their favourite squeaky toy, and add in fun enrichment toys like the LMH snuffle cabbage or peach toy

4. Keep goodbyes short and sweet

Dragging out your farewell only builds your dog’s anxiety. The key is to keep things light, loving, and low-key.

  • Stay upbeat and calm: Your dog mirrors your energy. A positive goodbye helps reassure them that everything is okay, and your confidence helps them feel safe.

  • Distractions: Hand over a favourite treat or interactive toy - like a snuffle éclair or snuggly crochet toy - to redirect their focus.

5. Come back bearing treats!

Reunions are the best. Make yours even more special:

  • Treat your dog to a freshen-up at the Love My Human Grooming Spa. It’s a lovely way to reset after time away (especially if they’re a bit whiffy).

  • Head to our Townhouse Cafe for a welcome-back meal. A puppuccino and afternoon tea? Yes please!

The Final Bark

Leaving your dog behind isn’t easy - but with the right care, familiar comforts, and a plenty of Love My Human magic, you can both enjoy your break.
